Feeling overwhelmed or stuck in life? Discover the Sacred Pause: a 2-step faith- and science-based sequence to regulate your nervous system and stop the stress spiral.

Have you ever said something or made a decision and wished you could take it back the second it left your mouth?
Most people think the problem is what they said or what they did. I can tell you that the problem started a few seconds earlier. Between what happened to you and how you responded, there was a moment. A tiny, almost invisible gap. In that gap, your old, unhealed wounds desperately wanted to react, but your healed, authentic self had the opportunity to choose the response or reaction you truly wanted.
For decades of my life, I missed that gap. I lived in a constant state of reaction, urgency, and Sunday-night dread. I tried to fix my exhaustion with more discipline, more planners, and more willpower. But I was treating a systems problem with a willpower solution, and that combination produces the same result every time: exhaustion, shame, and another unfinished goal.
Transformation does not happen in the reaction. It happens in the sacred pause. Because every time you choose peace over your old pattern, you take control of your life and become the person God created you to be.
Today, we are going to look at the exact biological and spiritual mechanism behind why you feel so drained, and I am going to teach you the two-step sequence to stop the spiral. I also have an excellent ebook, The Sacred Pause, to walk you through the journey.
Welcome to the Sacred Pause.
The Problem: Two Branches, One Switch
If you are constantly exhausted, struggling with brain fog, or feeling like you are always waiting for the other shoe to drop, I need you to hear this truth: You are not broken. This response is not a malfunction. It is your body doing exactly what it was built to do.
Your autonomic nervous system operates on two primary branches, and you have only one switch to toggle between them.
The first is the Sympathetic Nervous System. Think of this as your body’s gas pedal. It is your fight-or-flight response. When this system is activated, your body is flooded with stress chemistry, specifically cortisol, catecholamines, and growth hormone. This system was beautifully designed by God to keep you alive in moments of acute physical danger. It redirects blood flow away from your digestive and restorative organs and pumps it into your limbs so you can survive a threat.
The problem is that our modern world keeps this switch flipped on almost permanently. A tense email from your boss, a disagreement with your spouse, or a notification on your phone can trigger the exact same chemical cascade as a physical threat. When you live in a chronic sympathetic state, you are constantly draining your energy reserves. You cannot think clearly, you cannot connect authentically, and you certainly cannot pursue your life’s purpose, because your body believes you are in a war zone.
The Solution: The Chemistry of Renewal
The second system is the Parasympathetic Nervous System. This is the brake pedal. It is the “rest and digest” or “renew and restore” state.
When you flip the switch into the parasympathetic state, the stress chemistry drains away and is replaced by renewing chemistry. Your body releases DHEA (the vitality hormone), oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin.

This is where the magic happens. Research from the HeartMath Institute has shown that oxytocin interacts directly with heart receptors, fundamentally changing your heart rhythm from a chaotic, jagged pattern to a smooth, rolling sine wave. When you are in this state, your prefrontal cortex—the logical, creative, problem-solving part of your brain—comes back online. You stop reacting to your oldest wounds and start responding from your clearest thinking.
But how do you flip the switch when the world around you is spinning out of control?
You cannot out-think a nervous system in survival mode. You have to use your biology to change your biology.
(If you want to see this biological shift happening in your own body in real time, here is a heart rate variability (HRV) tracking device, which is the most accurate way to measure when your nervous system actually flips the switch from drain to renewal).
What is the Sacred Pause?
The Sacred Pause is the intentional gap between a trigger and your response. Here is a guide if you would like more information.
When the email comes in, when the criticism lands, or when the feeling of overwhelm hits your chest, your body’s automatic program is to rush forward and react. The Sacred Pause is the deliberate, engineered decision to stop the assembly line.
Simply naming the gap is the entire intervention. You are acknowledging, out loud or in your mind, “My nervous system is activated right now, and I refuse to make a decision from a state of alarm”. You can read about how to stop making decisions in chaos in another article I wrote, “Stop Making Decisions in Chaos.”
The Two-Step Sequence to Take Control
Taking the Sacred Pause is not about suppressing your emotions or pretending you aren’t stressed. It is a precise, two-step biological sequence that you must run in a specific order.
Step 1: Regulate Your Breath First
You cannot access authentic positive emotion while you are still physiologically activated. Logic cannot override an alarm bell. You must regulate your physical body first.
Place your hand over the center of your chest. This physical touch draws your attention away from racing thoughts and grounds you in your body. Begin breathing slowly and rhythmically. Inhale for five seconds, and exhale for five seconds. This ten-second rhythm is the resonant frequency that begins to pull your heart rate variability out of chaos and signals to your brain that you are safe.
Step 2: Activate a Genuine Positive Emotion Second
Once your breathing is steady, you move to the second step. Bring to mind a genuine feeling of appreciation, gratitude, or love. This cannot be a forced, fake positive thought. It must be a real memory or a tangible blessing you can feel in your chest.
Why does the order matter? Because if you try to force yourself to “think positive” while your body is flooded with cortisol, your brain will reject the thought as a lie. You must calm the physical alarm first so that the downshift can begin, making the renewing chemistry of DHEA and oxytocin accessible to your system.
The Science and the Spirit: Why This Works
From an engineering and biological perspective, this two-step sequence works because of the vagus nerve.
The vagus nerve is the ultimate brain-heart-gut communication line. It is the longest cranial nerve in your body and serves as the primary pathway for the parasympathetic nervous system. When you engage in slow, heart-centered breathing, you are directly stimulating the vagus nerve. You are literally sending a mechanical, biological signal to your brain that says, “The emergency is over. We are safe to rest.”
But this is not just science. It is deeply spiritual.
In 1 Kings 19:11-13, the prophet Elijah is standing on a mountain, exhausted, burned out, and terrified for his life. God tells Elijah to stand and wait for His presence to pass by. First comes a powerful wind that shatters the rocks. But God was not in the wind. Then comes an earthquake. But God was not in the earthquake. Then a fire. But God was not in the fire.
After the fire came a gentle whisper. And that is where God was.
God does not usually shout over the chaotic, sympathetic alarms of our busy lives. He speaks in the quiet. Stillness is the doorway to the mechanism. When we take the Sacred Pause, we are not just doing a breathing exercise; we are quieting the wind, the earthquake, and the fire of our nervous system so that we can finally hear the whisper of the Holy Spirit guiding our next step.
Where to Use the Sacred Pause in Real Life
To make this practical, you need to map out where your energy is being stolen and where it can be reclaimed.
Your Draining Situations: Look for the moments in your day that consistently push you into the sympathetic survival state. For most high-achieving adults, this happens during deep, concentrated work, moments of interpersonal conflict, periods of heavy decision fatigue, or when you receive criticism. When you encounter these triggers, do not push through them. Stop. Run the two-step sequence. Regulate the breath, then activate the emotion.
Your Renewing Situations: You can also use the Sacred Pause proactively to set the tone for your life. Use it during your morning routine before you ever look at your phone. Use it during transitions—like sitting in your car for sixty seconds after work before walking into the house to your family. Use it before stepping into a hard conversation or right before you go to sleep to clear the day’s static.
(If you struggle to transition into restful sleep because your mind won’t shut off, I highly recommend this program to regulate your nervous system so you can be more present, connected, and joyful) Supporting your body’s natural downshift is a critical part of maintaining your parasympathetic baseline).
Conclusion: Stop Reacting, Start Transforming
The greatest lie the enemy tells us is that we are permanently broken and incapable of change. But the truth is, you don’t need to “fix” yourself; you simply need to teach your body that it is safe again. Do not be afraid to talk with a counselor or therapist; having a different perspective can go a long way toward helping you move forward in life. I recommend online-therapy.com or Talkspace. Both are great resources.
The lotus flower does not grow by fighting the mud. It grows by rooting into it, remaining still, and drawing nourishment until it is ready to break the surface. By mastering the Sacred Pause, you stop feeding the scrap pile of burnout and start building the foundation for a life of purpose, clarity, and peace.
The next time you feel the panic rising, the frustration mounting, or the urge to react taking over, remember that you have a choice. Take the Sacred Pause. Regulate your breath. Activate your gratitude.
Give God enough room to interrupt the pattern.
